Practical tips for choosing cylinder locks

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR CHOOSING CYLINDER LOCKS

Důležité upozornění na úvod: Important reminder; Do not underestimate other security components, such as doors, hardware, and the mortise lock itself, as they all contribute to the overall safety of your property.

1) Always Use Certified Security Products

  • A useful tool when selecting a lock is the Security Pyramid, which categorizes locks into four security classes according to the relevant standard (ČSN P ENV 1627).

2) For Entrance Doors to Apartments and Houses, Choose at Least Security Class 3, Preferably Class 4

  • The highest security class ensures that the product is certified against all common destructive attacks, offering maximum protection.

3) Do Not Trust Door-to-Door Salespeople

  • There have been cases where various companies offer free or paid security assessments and then try to sell you overpriced products under the guise of higher security. Always verify the qualifications of the seller and avoid making a purchase if you have any doubts.

4) Always Request the Original Packaging and Security Card

  • The lock should come in its sealed original packaging. For certified high-security locks, a security card must be included, which is necessary for duplicating keys.

5) Be Cautious When Buying Second-Hand Locks

  • It is better to avoid purchasing used locks, as they may not be in good technical condition, and you can never be sure who might still have copies of the keys.

6) Some Locks Require Regular Maintenance and Inspection

  • Check with the seller and carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure proper maintenance of your lock.

7) Beware of Unethical Locksmiths

  • Avoid situations where a locksmith is called to open a locked door but then destroys the lock and forces you to buy an overpriced replacement. If possible, choose qualified locksmiths with the official title Locksith. A database of reputable locksmiths can be found on the website of the Association of Lock and Key Services (AZKS).
